Roof maintenance should be a standard chore for homeowners, but in reality, it’s generally one of the most ignored. Between the danger and the inconvenience, it’s not uncommon for homeowners to go years without even thinking about their roof. If you want to avoid an unnecessary (and costly) repair in the future, it may be time to take our roofing tips to heart.
Trim the Trees
While a relatively new roof in good shape can fend off a few broken branches, don’t subject it to extra pressure for no good reason. It only takes one storm to shake the stability of your trees, and trimming them is a great way to ensure they’ll hit the ground rather than the roof. Long limbs on trees can also scrape up against your shingles, wearing them down over time even if they never detach.
Give Your Roof Some Breathing Room
Clogged gutters and overzealous insulation can affect your roof’s draining system and overall ventilation. In Georgia, you want quality insulation that will lower your energy bills of course, but this shouldn’t come at the cost of your ventilation. Clear out any debris or leaves that have built up in the gutters and check to make sure there are some open spaces in the insulation under the roof.
Watch for Water Damage
Water damage anywhere in the home is trouble which is why it’s so important to catch it early. This doesn’t mean climbing on top of your roof every time there’s a storm, but it should include inspecting the attic every season (at least) to see if there’s mildew, staining, or even mold.
Beware the Shade
The sunlight will kill most instances of mold, fungus, and algae, but the areas of the roof in permanent shade won’t get those same benefits. If you have a roof that’s sloped, you should be able to see some discoloration without having to get out the dreaded ladder. But if you have a flat roof, you may not have much choice if a good deal of the roof is in darkness.
